Richard Caulfield is amongst the most significant figures in scholarly learning in 19th-century Cork. A graduate of TCD, he published a series of historical and antiquarian books between 1853 and 1882, many of which drew on manuscript materials which are no longer extant. A list of these can be found below. In addition, he served as President of the Cork Cuvierian Society, Librarian of the Royal Cork Institution, and subsequently of Queen's College Cork, a position he held at the time of his death on 3 February 1887. His papers were unfortunately broken up after his death, but a significant portion was purchased by Robert Day (1836-1914) and Cecil Crawford Woods (1847-1901), and some of this material found its way to UCC subsequently.
