What can be requested?

You can request scans of book chapters and journal articles located in UCC Library’s general print collections. You can also request scans from some collections located in  Special Collections.

Please note: All scans must be compliant with copyright law. You can only request whichever is the greater of one chapter or 10% of a book or one article from a journal.

If there is an electronic copy you cannot order a scan for this item but you can link to the electronic version in Canvas.

You can request up to the following amount for each module:

  • one chapter of a book
  • one article from a journal issue/magazine
  • one scene from a play
  • one paper from a set of conference proceedings
  • one report of a single case from a volume of judicial proceedings
  • one short story, poem or play (up to 10 pages) of an anthology
  • OR 10% of the total publication, whichever is the greater

What is the Digital Content Store (DCS)

The Digital Content Store (DCS) is a repository and workflow tool managed by the Copyright Licensing Agency (CLA). It holds the CLA compliant scans of book and journal extracts and provides a stable link allowing students to  access it via an institution’s VLE. The DCS checks that the extract can be used, is copyright compliant and does not exceed permitted scanning limits.

How does it work?

When you want to place a scanned extract from a book or a print journal on Canvas, for use by students studying a particular module, just complete the form below and submit it to the library. (Please note you must have registered your class details first) Details will be checked against the DCS for copyright compliance. We will then scan the item and upload it to the DCS. This will generate a link which we will send to you to place on Canvas. The link can only be used for the course for which it was requested. If you want to use the same  article for another course just let us know. The university must own a copy of anything to be scanned. If we don't currently own a copy we may buy a copy or buy a copyright fee paid scan of the article from the British Library.

Before you submit a request

Please check the UCC Library catalogue to see if the books or journals are available in the library. We do not usually provide scans if there is an electronic copy of the item but you can link to the electronic version in Canvas.

How long will it take to process my request?

We will try to make the scanned copy available as soon as possible. However, turnaround time will depend on the volume of requests received.

Reading Lists for Canvas

UCC Reading Lists for Canvas is a service provided by UCC Library, using Keylinks software, that will give students direct access to course readings via Canvas. Lists can contain all the  resources that you expect your students to engage with during your course, including e-books, book chapters, e-journal articles, television programmes, web resources, and multimedia. Students can link  directly to these resouces from the module area in Canvas. They can also link to the library catalogue giving real time information on print book availability.
