IReL and Open Access: Company of Biologists

IReL, the Irish Research eLibrary is a nationally funded electronic research library. IReL also seeks to secure open access agreements with publishers.

Overview

The Company of Biologists Read and Publish agreement (2023-2025) enables all eligible corresponding authors, affiliated with participating IReL institutions (including UCC), to publish open access articles in CoB journals, without needing to pay article processing charges (APCs).

The agreement includes fee-free publishing in fully OA journals – Disease Models & Mechanisms and Biology Open.

Researchers can continue to publish immediately OA without charge in the hybrid journals – Development, Journal of Cell Science, and Journal of Experimental Biology. The agreement also includes unlimited access to the journals and their archives dating back to 1853.

Instructions for Authors

For your article submission to be included under the agreement, you must be the corresponding author and affiliated to 'University College Cork'. In the article submission process you must correctly identify your institution as 'University College Cork'. You must use your UCC email address, and not addresses from other domains.

At acceptance, the corresponding author will be sent a licence agreement, which includes details of the CC-BY option.

Corresponding authors will be emailed an APC payment link (via RightsLink) displaying the waived fee and a link to request approval by their institution. Authors will be asked to register with the RightsLink site in order to complete the transaction. Publication will proceed following verification by the institution through the RightsLink Institution dashboard, and articles will be published under a CC-BY(4.0) licence.
