At University College Cork Library we offer innovative services, resources and spaces that align with your learning, teaching and research needs.

Context

 

The Library has always been considered at the heart of the University; however, contemporary academic libraries now operate within and contribute to a rapidly changing environment.  

Given the evolving role of university libraries in this fast-paced environment of change in the higher education sector it is timely to review the IS Strategy which contains both the Library Strategy and IT Strategy. 

A wide range of views obtained internally, formally and informally, have informed this Strategic plan

 

 

Strategic Themes

 

Strategic Theme 1 

Cultivate opportunities of exceptional library outreach and inclusion within the local, national and international community. 

Key Actions:

  • Re-imagining library space to create open and welcoming spaces for our communities. 
  • Develop opportunities for alumni engagement and fund-raising activities. 
  • Become an exemplar for UCC’s commitment to the sustainability agenda. 
  • Greater involvement in community engagement. 

 

Strategic Theme 2 

Create energising and innovative opportunities for digital and information literacy capabilities in the Connected University.

Key Actions:

  • Operationalise an engaging and interdisciplinary digital, information and media literacy framework mapped to graduate attributes.
  • Become an exemplar for online learning, developing a suite of reusable learning objects.
  • Facilitate adoption of new modes of creative outputs, building students’ skills and competencies in new media literacies.

 

Strategic Theme 3 

Create engaging, delightful user experiences across physical and virtual spaces. 

Key Actions:

  • Develop technology-rich, interdisciplinary learning and teaching spaces that foster experimentation, co-creating and collaboration. 
  • Adopt methodologies of user experience design and a data-driven approach to delivering library services, spaces and collections.
  • Create an intuitive and response online library presence across multiple platforms, embedded at point-of-need. 

 

Strategic Theme 4 

Acquire and make accessible top-quality information resources on behalf of the University.

Key Actions: 

  • Identify and develop strategic collection themes in order to develop research expertise at a national level. 
  • Develop collection management processes and metadata procedures to meet user needs. 
  • Develop an informed, data-driven financial process for adequate print and electronic library collections.

 

Strategic Theme 5 

Curate, preserve and deliver unique UCC content for the advancement of new knowledge.

Key Actions: 

  • Establish a digital services framework to enable the delivery of digitized content.
  • Develop a core competency for digital preservation for the University.
  • Develop adequate storage infrastructure and service capacity to ensure the preservation and conservation of the University’s unique and special collections.

 

Strategic Theme 6 

Lead the University in a global-first approach to Digital Scholarship and Open Science, becoming a hub for innovation in the process of research.

Key Actions:

  • Facilitate and drive an engaged community of practice in the areas of digital scholarship and open science, ensuring a greater transparency and reproducibility of scholarly work. 
  • Inform the management of University research outputs, driving the adoption of international best-practice and infrastructure.
  • Maximise Open Access to UCC research publications, and engage the University community on broader changes related to the Open Science agenda.

 

 

Critical Enablers

 

Vital to the Strategic Plan is the identification and realisation of four critical enablers. 

These critical enablers are: 

  • A positive and supportive working environment, empowering staff to develop, grow and be successful. 
  • A transparent, responsive operational planning process within the Library.
  • An adequate and fit-for-purpose budget and financial allocation model.
  • Organisational support across the Library, Information Services, and the University Community.
