In 1965 the Very Rev. Fr. Brendan E. O’Mahony, OFM. Cap., PhD (Louvain) was appointed Professor of Philosophy at UCC. He had received his early education at the Christian Brothers’ School, Youghal and at Rochestown College, Cork. O'Mahony entered the Arts Faculty of UCC in 1954 and graduated in Philosophy in 1956. He was awarded his MA in Philosophy in 1957; all with first class honours. In 1960 he was ordained a priest. He studied Theology in Rome and in 1962 pursued a PhD at the Catholic University of Louvain, Belgium. His publications include A Medieval Semantic, articles in continental Philosophical journals and in Studies (Ireland). He resigned from Dean of Arts in 1976 and since his retirement in 2000 devoted himself to literary pursuits including publishing a novel, Strano (2006), and a number of short stories in literary journals. He died in 2020.
