The Maps

BL/SFB/CVT/U/7: Paliacatta or Gesdret

The walled city is at the centre of the map. The cityplan is a square and at each corner is an arrow shape pointing outward. Inside the walled city are buildings, trees, people and horses. There is a flag pole with a flag at the top in the lower right arrow-shaped corner. Around the walled city is a moat filled with water. The drawbridge across the moat is in the foreground and a few people are preparing to enter. Surrounding the moat are fields, hills and trees on the top, left and right sides of the map.

A collection of voyages and travels : some now first printed from original manuscripts, others now first published in English: in six volumes: to which is prefixed, an introductory discourse (supposed to be written by the celebrated Mr. Locke) intitled, The whole history of navigation from its original to this time: illustrated with near three hundred maps and cuts, curiously engraved on copper. London: Printed for Awnsham and John Churchill at the Black Swan in Pater-noster Row, 1704.

BL/SFB/CVT/U/16: Jaffnapatnam

The map shows a bird's eye view over Jaffnapatnam. The city is in the centre of the map and is walled. The city has buildings and people. In the foreground are bushes, a large tree, people and animals. In the background are buildings, tilled fields and a forest with a cloudy sky overhead. On the left side is the sea with four large sailing ships, six smaller boats with sails and one rowboat. On the top left corner of the map is a legend of 18 places which are numbered on the map. The map caption is in the top centre and is written on a unfurling strip of ribbon. A compass is on the centre left side.
