1.   1 May 1843

Mss letter from Thomas Crofton Croker, the Admiralty, to Sir William [Betham]. He gives his valuation of [McSwinnin’s] Manuscripts, including a history of the United Irishmen in the North. He does not believe them to hold any information not already “new or important”. He states that at the annual meeting of the Percy Society a copy of [Betham’s) Kerry Pastoral will be delivered “an interesting and…no doubt accurate account of Irish manners at the commencement of the last Century”. He also mentions two publications having been issued in the context of the annual meeting of the Camden, the effect of the death of the Duke of Sussex on the Antiquaries, and his opinion of a new volume of the Transactions of the Royal Irish Academy. He finishes with a comment on the state of the Irish Archaeological Society.
