Hawtin: Displaying a Collection: Home

5 different areas in a collection.

12 Months in a Collection

Over 2018 there was a year long display in the Rare Books Reading Room in Special Collections which changed on a regular basis. This online guide complemented the physical display..

The purpose of the display was to showcase the range that may be in any one collection as well as to demonstrate how collections in UCC Library's Special Collections interconnect.

For 2018 the display focused on the Hawtin Collection which is particularly rich with 19th century and early 20th century printings.

Special Collections

Special Collections is home to UCC's unique collections of literary manuscripts, early printed books pre-1850, books from printing presses, collections donated from individuals, 18th - 20th century newspapers, theses, maps, pamphlets and microfilm.

Special Collections are “elements of distinction that serve to differentiate an academic or research library from its peers” (Dooley & Luce).

We, in Special Collections, have a dual role, not only to facilitate current research but also to care and conserve these unique and distinctive materials for future users.

Opening Hours

Following Government directives that higher education institutions should close, UCC physical campus is closed. If you have any queries relating to our collections please email specialcollectionsarchives@ucc.ie as this email address will be monitored regularly.

Face-to-face services at Special Collections & Archives have resumed in a limited capacity: Monday-Friday 10-12:45. Please note that we will have reduced capacity due to social distancing measures, and access will be by appointment only. Walk-ins and same-day requests will not be possible. To book items & a workspace please click HERE.

We want to make your visit as enjoyable, productive and safe as possible. To do that, we’ll need to work together.  We would especially ask you to follow all the public health advice, and not to come to Special Collections & Archives if you’re feeling unwell.

Keeping everyone in our buildings safe is our first priority, so there will be some changes to how you access and use our services. We apologise in advance for any delays and trust you will understand.

UCC Library's new Scan and Deliver Service is now live! Submit a request and we'll scan a book chapter/journal article and deliver it to you via email. There will be limited access to material from Special Collections. Every effort will be made to fulfill requests but this may not always be possible due to availability, copyright restrictions, size and condition of materials.
