Library Essentials: Renew a Book

The Library offers a huge range of service and supports. Please see the options below to discover the wide range of options and services available to you.

Renew a Book

You can renew a book that you have borrowed in the following ways:

  • Log on to your Library Account and renew online. This will only work on or before the due date.
  • You can email library@ucc.ie or phone 021 4902292.
  • You can ask a member of staff to renew the book for you at the Library Services Desk. You do not have to have the book with you.
  • You can renew the book using one of the self-issue machines.

Undergraduates & Postgraduates (Masters & Diploma) , and External Readers (with borrowing access) can renew a book twice after the initial standard loan period.

Staff & Doctoral Postgraduates can renew a book up to 3 times.

Your return date may be shortened if a book is recalled by another user. The standard loan period is 6 weeks unless another library user requests the item. Once an item is recalled you are only guaranteed the item for 2 weeks from the check out date. You will receive a recall notice by email giving you a new due date. If you have already had the item for over 2 weeks you will be requested to return the item in 3 days.

The standard loan period for External Readers with Borrowing access is 2 weeks, renewable twice - in person, online, by telephone and email, unless it is recalled by another reader. If an item is recalled during the first standard loan period, External Readers are guaranteed the item for the 2 weeks. However, they will not be able to renew the item upon returning it. If External Readers renew the item, and it subsequently recalled, they will be requested to return the item in 3 days

You cannot renew Short Loan items (yellow sticker and U prefix).

You cannot renew a book if it has been recalled by another reader or a library staff member.
