Early 20th century newspapers

Early 20th century newspapers

The beginning of the 20th century was a period of intense political and cultural activity in Ireland, something which is reflected in the considerable number of newspapers and journals produced at this time.  These range from relatively durable titles such as United Ireland and Sinn Féin to short-lived papers lasting only an issue or two.  They range across a huge spectrum of political opinion, from staunch Unionism to radical Republicanism, and encompass literary activities, sporting interests, nascent Feminism, trade-unionism and political and cultural commentary.  Many of the titles are available on microfilm, and through the Irish Newspaper Archive's Radical Archive.  In addition, reproductions of many individual issues are included in the Revolution Papers series.

Other resources

Some material from the revolutionary period has been placed online by Cork Public Museum.

The Shan Van Vocht is available from UCD.
