Spotlight On

The Beamish & Crawford Estate Collection
T
hese estate papers are currently being fully listed by UCC Library Archives Service and are unavailable for research for the moment. We expect the collection listing to be completed by early 2019.

The collection contains estate papers, mainly accounts, includes Crawford correspondence about family and financial matters (1780-1790); Captain Richard Pigott Beamish's rentals and accounts (1874-1889); as well as correspondence received by Richard Pigott Bemish regarding financial affairs and family matters (1853-1866). There are also legal papers arising from the sale of the Stannard Incumbered Estate, c. 1850, involving lands in Co. Waterford and the Cork baronies of Fermoy and Barrymore, in which Crawford had an interest.  It includes an account book [1811], maps, valuations, and rentals. [1750-1900].

The records of Beamish & Crawford Brewery were donated to Cork City and County Archives a number of years ago.

Samuel Lopes Salzedo Collection
The Samuel Salzedo Collection consists of two letters from George Bernard Shaw to Salzedo on the topics of space/curvilinear universe, and the composer Paganini. It was donated to UCC Library by Caroline Lopes Salzedo (his granddaughter) in 2013.

Salzedo was born in London in 1872, the son of Sephardic Jews who had emigrated from Amsterdam. He had a gift for languages and, as well as working in Russia, and in Rome for the International Agricultural Institute, he worked for most of his life as a legal interpreter and translator in London, fluent in over 10 languages. As a young man he rejected religion, and joined the Fabian Society where he met George Bernard Shaw. He was also a keen amateur musician and published a book on Niccoló Paganini, which is the  subject of one of the letters. He died in London in 1957 and was survived by his son, composer Leonard Salzedo.
